The annual enrolment service of the 1st Kuching Company, the Boys’ Brigade and the Girls’ Brigade was held at the St. Thomas’ Cathedral on Sunday, 31 July 2011 at 8.15am service. The service was started by the marching in of the colours. The service was also held to coincide with the Youth Sunday of the Anglican Diocesan Youth Council (ADYC), which are organisations of all Anglican youths under the Diocesan of Sarawak and Brunei.

The Brigades’ Chaplain, Very Revd Michael Buma Galami, who is also the Dean of St. Thomas’ Cathedral, presided over the service. This service was witness by the Brigades members from other churches, members of Stedfast Association, parents, friends and church congregations.

The service was ended at 9.45am with the marching out of the colours and then follows by light refreshment. The 8.15am Choir Ministry members rendered the praise songs. The Brigades wish to thank all present to witness the enrolment service.

The 1st Kuching Boys’ Brigade celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday, 23 July 2011 in a grand reception dinner at Sarawak Club, Kuching.

The celebration brought together former officers and boys of the 1st Kuching Company who have served in the company over the past 50 years, some of whom came from as far as Australia, New Zealand, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

For many of the former officers, who were already in their 60s and early 70s, the occasion provided an excellent opportunity for a memorable trip down memory lane and a renewal of old ties.

Founded on 17 December 1961, the 1st Kuching Company was the pioneer of the BB movement in Borneo. It was the initiative of Charles Henry Ingka who, after spending years during the colonial era in Singapore, came back and introduced the idea of setting up the first BB Company at the St. Thomas’ Cathedral. (He has been with a BB company in Singapore for many years before coming back).

Months later, the 1st Kuching Company was established, with Ingka as its founding Captain. Joining Ingka were the Kedit brothers, Albert and Peter, who grew up in Singapore and served in a BB Company in the island republic.

The 50th Anniversary Celebration was also held to coincide with the 3rd Regional Games and Fellowship of the Stedfast Associations, which are associations of former officers and boys of the Boys Brigade in the region. Participating in the regional meet were delegates from the Stedfast Associations of Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Kuching. They were also guests at the dinner to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1st Kuching Company of the Boys’ Brigade.

In his address, the present Captain, Mr. Norman Ng paid tribute to past captains, officers and chaplains for their contributions in making the company strong and stable and for guiding the boys towards Christian manliness. He also called on present officers and boys of the company to take stock of the past, righting the wrong and overcoming the challenges, with the view to setting their sight on achieving higher goals and targets in the BB days ahead.

The highlight of the anniversary dinner was the cutting of the anniversary cake by past and present captains of the 1st Kuching Company along with chaplain the Very Revd Michael Buma Galami, followed by the launching of new 1st Kuching BB logo and band display by former officers of the company.

The Boys Brigade was founded by Sir William Alexander Smith in 1883 in Glasgow, Scotland. It has since spread its wing to almost all the Commonwealth countries and today the movement has about 500,000 members in 60 countries.

INTRODUCTION
This year, The First Kuching Company, The Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The following celebration events have taken place so far:

• Welcoming the New Year 2011 and kicking-off celebration of the Jubilee Year– This year was a significant year, therefore a Lion Dance performance was organized at the Chinese New Year Party held on 12 February 2011. Program included a Musical Medley Dance presented by 1st Kuching GB and a Hip-Hop Street Dance by the Boys. Recruitment was also done and 45 new members joined.

• Website & Facebook – with the current popularity of the social network available in the internet, a website and Facebook account was created. These serve as a tool to disseminate information & updates of activities to members, ex-members and the public.

• Fire & Rescue Course was held on 26-27th March 2011 at St Faith’s Parish Centre. The 2-days, 1-night course combined with 3rd Kuching Company saw 21 members going through an exciting programme that aims to better equip members in times of emergency.

• Youth Conference(combined with GB) was held on 2nd April 2011 at 9th Floor, KTS Crown Towers with the Theme “Under Construction”. The conference sponsored by KTS brought together more than 300 youths from BB, GB and other Youth Fellowships from all over Kuching. The Conference aims at equipping youth for the future, getting them together to learn how to do well enough in school to graduate with life, college, and career-readiness skills. The Conference activities included:-
o Introduction of KTS Group of Companies, its seven main sectors of business as well as job opportunities to the young people
o Fun and informative activities to feed youth on spiritual faith, building a foundation of principles and virtue(with Good moral), abstinence and making wise and positive career and life choices.
o Speakers were Dr Issac Biju and Mdm Grace Lim
o Career direction by 4 professionals –
• Medical by Dr. Judith Tang
• Teacher by Grace Lim
• Engineer by Ngu Lock Tee
• Designer by Roy Hansan

We will be organizing the following events for the rest of this year:

• BB Sarawak 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner will be held in Sibu on 16 April 2011 at Kingwood Inn Hotel. It will coincide with the 47th Brigade Council AGM which will be held from 15-17th April. The 1st Kuching Company is organizing a group of 10 representatives to attend the Dinner. The 1st batch of Pioneer members of 1st Kuching is also invited.

• Festival of Sports “MIAW Games” (Regional level) will be held from 12th June to 10th July 2011 for all BB companies in Kuching. Captain’s Ball, Basketball, Soccer, Table-Tennis, Carrom, Chess, Track and some novelty events will be held as inter-company competitions for Boys and Officers. This will be a great interaction for members in the Brigade.

• Celebration Dinner on 23th July for 300 past & present BB members
The Celebration Dinner will be held as follows:

Time :6.30pm – 11.00pm

• Community work – Habitat for Humanity.(Regional Level) A schedule had been lined up for all the BB companies to take part in this building of houses at various construction sites. The project starts in May 2011 until December 2011. This aims towards building a caring youth generation.

• Founder’s Day Service on 1st October 2011 will be organized by the NCOs’ Council(Regional Level). The venue will be at St Thomas Cathedral as the Host Company is 1st Kuching.

• BB 50th Anniversary Camp will be held from 25th to 28 November at Sinar Serapi Eco Theme Park. The camp will be attended by all the Kuching BB Companies. Expected participants are 100. Various fun activities like team building, water games, canoeing, cross country run will be organized. There will also be a closing ceremony for the 50th Celebration year.

THE OBJECTIVES:
• To celebrate the 50th Anniversary/Golden Jubilee of 1st Kuching BB (1961-2011).
• To assemble former members, present members and their parents, other BB & GB companies and friends for a time of reunion, fellowship and celebration.
• To instill a sense of awareness of the BB impact in the lives of many for an all-round development.
• To engage members in meaningful activities and to develop young people into responsible citizens with sound moral characters.

On 12th February 2011, over 60 members of 1st Kuching Company, The Boys’ Brigade and The Girls’ Brigade attended the Chinese New Year Party at the Parish Hall. The party was organised by the non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and young leaders (YLs) of both companies.

Among those present were Chaplain and Dean The Very Rev’d Michael Buma Galami, Parochial Church Council (PCC) Secretary Robert Tnay, Kuching Stedfast Association Secretary Henry Aik, 1st Kuching BB Captain Norman Ng and 1st Kuching GB Captain Avril Soon.

The party started with an opening prayer led by our BB Captain, followed by Praise and Worship led by our NCOs and YLs.

Then there was a 30-minute lion dance performance by a professional lion dance group, which captivated the attention of everyone present.

Our party continued with one interesting game by NCOs and YLs. All BB and GB members took part in this game.

This year, both BB and GB members took time to entertain those present. The girls performed a musical medley and the boys performed a street dance.

At the end of party, our GB Captain said a grace for our light refreshments. Overall, our team has successfully organised the party.

We also received a lot of feedback from both members and officers since this year’s approach was very different compared to previous years.

This year 2011 will be significant for the First Kuching Company of The Boys’ Brigade. It is the year when the First Kuching Company celebrates its 50th Anniversary of its founding. The birth of the BB in East Malaysia, Sarawak in particular, officially took place at the first Enrolment Service held in St. Thomas’ Cathedral on Sunday 17th December 1961. Since that fateful day, there are now 51 companies in East Malaysia alone, 34 in Sarawak, 15 in Sabah and 2 in Brunei.

The Golden Jubilee Celebration Main Committee for the 50th Anniversary of the First Kuching Company had their first meeting on Thursday 28th January 2010, at the MPR, St Thomas’ Cathedral, at 7.30p.m.

What Music Connects you to God?

Musical preferences are complicated and personal things. One person loves rock music, another classical, a third folk and a fourth hip-hop. And all of them might be sitting in the same pew!

Given these differences in musical preference, how should we use music in worship? Should we just standardize on one style of music and expect everyone to take part, or incorporate different styles into worship to connect with as many people as possible?

Speaking as an avid lover of music, I think that when we join a community, we need to learn to worship in the way that community worships. We need to uphold the parts of the body of Christ that are responsible for worshiping God through music, even when the style of music isn’t to our personal taste.

History of Pesta

The National Pesta and Convention (also commonly known as 'Pesta') began as the National Review and Display in 1966 is said to be one of the biggest events which is unique to the Boys' Brigade in Malaysia. Today, participation is open to all current members of the Boys' Brigade in Malaysia, as well as members of overseas Boys' Brigade companies. Whilst games and other activities vary across each Pesta, it has been customary since 1966 for a national band competition to be held at every Pesta except during 1988, 1992 and 2001.

A footdrill competition and a group singing competition were added to the tradition in later years. During the Pesta in Malacca, more element were considered for the Pesta overall title, which includes a State Council march past, size of contingent, banner design and other much more complicated processes in determining the overall champion. However, this system was not used in the following pesta, held in 2006 in Kuala Lumpur. The Kuala Lumpur Pesta 2006 more or less reverted to the traditional system of determining the overall champions, with an inclusion of one more event, which is the state sport.

On 28th and 29th June 2008, 104 members of The Boys’ Brigade, (aged 13-18) attended the Firemen and First Aid Training Camp at St. Thomas Secondary School. This training camp was organised by the 1st Kuching Company, The Boys’ Brigade in collaboration with Kuching Civil Defense Department and Sarawak Southern Regional Council, The Boys’ Brigade.

The participants were from 1st Kuching Company (St. Thomas’s Cathedral), 2nd Kuching Company (Trinity Methodist Church), 3rd Kuching Company (St. Faith’s Church), 6th Kuching Company (Chin Kwong Methodist Church) and 7th Kuching Company (Chin Daw Methodist Church). They were divided into three groups namely Basic Firemen, Advance Firemen and Basic First Aid.

The main objective of this training camp is to equip them with the knowledge of the First Aid and Firemen which included the principles and practice of First Aides and Firemen, understanding the concept of First Aid and Firemen and functions of each equipment.

During the 2 days training, participants were given theory and practical lessons. A simple theory and practical test was conducted by the trainer on the second day to test the knowledge and understanding of the participants.

At the closing ceremony, the representative from Sarawak Southern Regional Council, Captain Michael Chai Khim Chuan (Captain of 3rd Kuching) thanked the Kuching Civil Defense Department for conducting the training and the school authorities for allowing the organising committee to use their facilities and venue. He also thanked Warrant Officer Griffin Gelengan and his committee for their effort in organising this training camp.

The camp was short but the participants had fun and gained a lot of knowledge. We hope that our collaboration with the trainers will not end here since we are planning to organise a similar training camp in the next future.

All of us have unique abilities and talents, given to us by God, although not everyone recognizes their own gifts. Blaine Smith of Nehemiah Ministries has posted a good article on recognizing your spiritual gifts and learning how they fit into God’s plan for your life. He challenges us not to dismiss our gifts by comparing them to other people’s, and to keep alert for opportunities to sharpen our talents in the service of God. Most of us are “one-talent” persons. We are not going to be another Billy Graham, Mahatma Ghandi or Mother Teresa.

When we see ourselves falling short of the accomplishments of certain renowned individuals, we can lose the motivation to take our own potential seriously. Each of us without exception, however, has significant gifts–and opportunities to invest them for Christ that vastly exceed our expectations. What this provision amounts to specifically varies greatly from person to person. But God wants each of us to begin with the a priors assumption that he has endowed us with important ability to meet vital human needs, and that he will open all the doors necessary for us to be productive.

This attitude of faith will help us take meaningful steps toward fully understanding our gifts and the opportunities Christ provides us to make a difference. Smith has written other articles about using your spiritual gifts and related topics. The BB Grip

Have you ever wondered how the famous ‘BB Handshake’ started? Unfortunately, I cannot tell you that but I can reveal how and when it came to Britain.

Joseph Cudlipp introduced the ‘BB Grip’ to Britain. In the 1950s, Harold T Barrow, former Company Chaplain and Secretary for Youth work in the forerunner to The Leprosy Mission, published a booklet entitled: ‘The Boys’ Brigade Handshake’, being an extended version of a Bible Class talk he had given to the 1st Maidstone and 12th West Kent companies, using II Kings 10 v 15 as his starting point. The booklet outlined the handshake as The Sign of Loyalty, A Declaration of Friendship, An Expression of Sympathy and Compassion, A Proof of Agreement and a Covenant of Fellowship. What does it mean to you?

Jos Cudlipp admired the way in which the BB was organised in the UK. On his tour he visited most of the large cities in Britain and Ireland. Naturally, he was warmly welcomed wherever he went, shaking hands with many British BB officers and boys. ‘Troop F’ was present for the Brigade Council weekend in Aberdeen and made a great impression upon its hosts, particularly members of the 1st Glasgow Company. The Founder’s son G Stanley Smith, then 15 years old, observed that the UBBA members had a particular way of shaking hands known as the ‘BB Grip’.

The BB Grip was described as ‘a handshake which involved dropping the little finger so that it goes between the little and third finger of the other chap’s hand’. In a letter to ‘Stedfast Mag’ in 1957, Stanley Smith recalled the introduction of the grip…. ‘we at once adopted it in our own company as ‘The First Glasgow Grip’, I have no doubt other companies did likewise. After I joined Headquarters Staff I travelled around a great deal and wherever I went always used to pass on the handshake to officers and boys ‘The BB Grip’. It soon became famous and today it is known all over the BB world.’

In August 1905, Revd Joseph H Cudlipp, Adjutant-General of the Pennsylvania Division of The United Boys’ Brigade of America, arrived in Liverpool on the start of a two month tour of the UK. He was editor and publisher of ‘The Brigade Boy’, the UBBA Journal and was accompanied by a Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal and Private of that organisation, described by him as ‘Troop F’. In the previous year he had undertaken a trip around the USA with a similar group but this was to be the trip of a lifetime.
